How does deposit.back work?
You answer a few questions about your lease and security deposit, and we generate a state-specific certified demand letter addressed to your landlord. The letter is printed, mailed via USPS Certified Mail with return receipt, and you get a tracking number to follow delivery.
What is a certified demand letter?
A certified demand letter is a formal written request sent via USPS Certified Mail, which provides proof that the letter was sent and delivered. Many states require tenants to send a written demand before filing a small claims case for an unreturned security deposit.
How long does delivery take?
Letters are typically printed and mailed within 1-2 business days of your order. USPS Certified Mail delivery usually takes 3-7 business days depending on the destination. You will receive tracking updates via email.
Can I cancel my order?
You can cancel your order for a full refund before the letter has been printed and entered into the mail stream. Once the letter has been mailed, we are unable to cancel the order. Contact us at support@depositsback.app as soon as possible if you need to cancel.
What if my landlord doesn't respond?
If your landlord does not respond to the demand letter, the certified mail receipt serves as documentation that you made a formal written demand. This documentation is typically required or helpful if you decide to file a claim in small claims court.
What states do you support?
We currently support 30 US states covering the majority of renters. Each letter is customized with the relevant state statutes, deadlines, and penalty provisions. Check our homepage to see if your state is covered.
